How these estimates are calculated

The ranges above are built from pricing published by Canadian piano moving companies, adjusted for piano type, area, distance, stairs and access. Where a company publishes its own rates, we have used them. Where we could not confirm prices in a region, we say so rather than quietly filling the gap.

Actual quotes vary. This is a budgeting tool, not a price list. A mover needs details about the instrument and the access at both ends before giving a reliable quote.

Piano moving costs across Canada

These ranges cover local moves under 50 kilometres. The low end assumes a small town or rural rate with clear ground floor access. The high end reflects major city rates. Add the extras further down for stairs and difficult access.

Published rates vary considerably between Canadian markets. Large metropolitan areas often carry higher base rates, while smaller communities may have lower local rates but additional travel charges when the nearest specialist mover is outside the area.

The table covers the ten provinces. The calculator will also estimate for Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, but we could not confirm any published pricing there either, so those figures should be treated as a rough starting point only.

What affects your estimate

Two piano moves that look identical on paper can come in $200 or more apart. Here is where the difference comes from.

The piano itself

Weight matters, but shape matters more. A standard upright weighs roughly 200 to 500 pounds and moves in one piece. A baby grand runs 500 to 700 pounds and has to be partly taken apart first, with the legs and pedal lyre removed and the body carried on a padded skid board. A full concert grand can exceed 1,300 pounds.

That disassembly and reassembly is skilled work, and it is one reason a grand can cost considerably more than an upright over the same distance. Extra crew, heavier equipment and slower handling all add to it.

Portable and slim cabinet digital pianos are much lighter than acoustics and are often priced closer to regular furniture. Large cabinet and hybrid digital pianos are a different matter. Some flagship models weigh well over 200 pounds and may still need specialist handling, so do not assume a digital is automatically a cheap move.

Stairs

Stairs are one of the biggest variables in a piano moving quote. If there are stairs at both addresses, the surcharge can apply at each end.

Published Canadian surcharges range from around $50 to $200 per flight. That spread is real rather than sloppy. A straight run in a wide stairwell is a different job from a curved switchback with a landing, which takes longer and needs more people. If your staircase turns, say so when you call.

Access at both ends

Anything that complicates the path adds cost. Long carries from the truck, narrow hallways, tight doorway turns, elevator bookings in a condo, and awkward parking all add time and crew.

If the piano cannot be moved safely through the normal access, a crane or hoist may be needed. Published Canadian rates put that specialist service at roughly $900 to $1,500 or more, depending on height and complexity.

Distance

Many specialist movers quote local piano moves as a flat fee based on the instrument and the access. As the distance increases, travel becomes a larger part of the quote, and movers may use a route-based flat rate, a mileage charge or another long-distance pricing method.

For a long-distance move, ask whether the piano travels on a dedicated truck or as part of a shared load. A shared load can reduce the price, but delivery windows may be longer. Ask how many times the piano will be loaded or transferred before it reaches the destination.

Season and timing

Summer is peak moving season across Canada, and month end is peak within that. Rates can be higher and availability is tighter. If your dates are flexible, a midweek move mid-month outside the summer may be easier to book and less expensive.

What a proper quote should include

Get the final price in writing. Some specialist piano movers will give a firm price by phone once they have the details, and that is fine. Just make sure the piano type, stairs, distance and any access charges are all reflected in what you receive, so you know what can change on moving day.

Check that the quote covers:

• Stairs, travel and equipment, itemised. If they are not listed, ask whether they are included or extra.
• What the insurance actually pays. Basic mover liability is often calculated by weight, which on a piano can work out to far less than the instrument is worth. The federal Office of Consumer Affairs advises confirming the actual liability amount or buying replacement-value protection. Ask for the figure, not the reassurance.
• Whether the piano is co-loaded on any move outside your city, and how many transfers are involved.
• Who handles disassembly and reassembly of a grand, and whether it is in the price.
• Whether they move pianos regularly. A general mover who will take a piano is not the same as a mover who specialises in them.

Budget for tuning after the move

A move can affect a piano’s tuning, particularly when the new home has different temperature or humidity conditions. Environmental change is generally a bigger factor than the journey itself, and a recently tuned piano moving into a similar environment may not need immediate attention.

If the piano does need tuning afterwards, give it about two to three weeks to acclimatise before booking the technician. Expect roughly $100 to $200. The Piano Technicians Guild is a good starting point for finding a qualified technician.

How much does it cost to move a piano in Canada?

Most local piano moves fall between $250 and $800 for an upright and $500 to $1,500 for a grand, depending on the market, the access and the stairs involved. Long distance and interprovincial moves are priced separately, based on weight and distance.

Can I move a piano myself?

It is possible with enough people and the right equipment, but the risk is badly asymmetric. A dropped or badly tilted piano can mean a cracked soundboard, broken legs or stripped tuning pins, and the repair often costs more than the move would have. Floors and door frames are at risk too.

How much extra does it cost to move a piano upstairs?

Published Canadian surcharges run roughly $50 to $200 per flight. If there are stairs at both addresses, the charge can apply at each end. Curved or switchback staircases cost more than straight runs.

Do movers take the legs off a grand piano?

Yes. Grands and baby grands are partly disassembled, with the legs and pedal lyre removed and the body carried on a padded skid board, then reassembled at the other end. Uprights normally stay intact.

How long does a piano move take?

Most local moves run two to four hours depending on access and setup. That is the job itself, not counting travel between the two addresses.

Is my piano insured during the move?

It depends on the coverage you choose. Basic liability is usually calculated by weight and rarely reflects what a piano is worth. Ask what the payout would be for your specific instrument, and buy additional coverage if the gap is uncomfortable.

Do I need to prepare the piano before the movers arrive?

Clear the path at both ends, remove anything sitting on top of the instrument, and tell the movers about stairs, tight turns or parking restrictions before the day. The crew handles wrapping and any disassembly.
